Keekee Speaks Here!

Today is the first day of school in our state.  One thing I love about this area is the way they collect ‘School Tools’ for the children.  The best part of it is which ever county you donate, your donations stay in that county.  Our area was hit really hard with a lot of cotton mill closings over the past several years and so these items are really important to so many children.

Churches, businesses, and other types of groups make major donations every year.  We even took up a collection of various items where I work.  I was so pleased to see just how much my fellow workers try to help out our community but especially our kids.  Way to go gang!!!

With gas prices dropping, a lot of people are taking their last chance at a vacation before school starts.  It starts here next week.  I know some states wait until after Labor Day to start but they don’t do that here.  They used to go back to school around the second Monday in August.  That was a dumb idea that I’m not sure who came up with.  At least they have gotten smarter and gotten closer to Labor Day like the rest of the country.

Did you know that there are some states that prescribe more medications per capita than others?  Well there are.  West Virginia came in first, followed by Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky.  The least prescribes states were Alaska at the bottom followed by California and Hawaii.  Isn’t that odd?  You would think a cold place like Alaska would have more need for medications than a warmer climate and California didn’t count the street corner pharmacists that a lot of people go to.  That wasn’t fair to California, now was it?  Those types of pharmacists (drug dealers that is) are everywhere unfortunately.

Well what does that that tell us about either the states or the doctors in those states?  There’s a great article at http://health.msn.com/health-topics if you want to know what all this seems to mean.  Why is it that southern states take more medications than others?  Could it be the method of cooking or what they eat?  It’s an interesting read.

I know Isaac Hayes from Chef in South Park.  No I don’t watch the show but I know several people that do and they are always telling me something about what they saw on the show.  What I didn’t realize is what a musical giant he was.  The original movie Shaft, or I should have said the theme song from the original movie Shaft, won Isaac Hayes an Oscar for best theme song in 1971 I believe it was.  It was a bit of a shock to hear that he passed away.  Especially so close to another famous entertainer passing away which was Bernie Mac.  It has been a sad week for the entertainment industry with the passing of these two men.  In fact, we have lost some of our greatest entertainers this year like Bo Diddly, George Carlin and too many more.  The world will be a duller place without their stars shining.

In going to health food stores with my friend to try and find wheat free foods for her, she came across a book about eating by your blood type.  She is a blood type O positive and according to this book, she isn’t supposed to eat wheat and a lot of other grains.  Isn’t that an odd coincidence or is it that she just happens to have a wheat allergy?

Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo is the author of the book and there is also a small version you can carry in your purse to use as a guide for when you go to the grocery store.  She’s going to start trying to follow the diet in that book and see if it makes any difference in the way she feels.  According to the book, it will make her feel much better in many ways.  If it works for her, I just may give it a try myself.
